It’s not just about the vitamin C, grapefruit has health benefits and nutrients that combine to give you a boost of nutritional power every time you eat a grapefruit or drink its juice! Even the albedo (the thick white pith between the fruit and the skin) is beneficial because it contains many anti-cancer agents that help fight a host of diseases.

  • Acidity – in spite of grapefruit having a less than sweet taste, its juice actually has an alkaline reaction after digestion, so that it treats acidity in the digestive system which can be the cause of other health problems. Grapefruit has been found useful in treating many many diseases caused by too much acid in the body’s system.
  • Atherosclerosis- the pectin in grapefruit will help reduce the accumulation of arterial deposits while the vitamin C helps to strengthen and maintain the elasticity of arteries. In addition, eating a grapefruit every day seems to alleviate rheumatorid arthritis, lupus and other inflammatory disorders symptoms. Pectin is a soluble fibre that also helps to lower blood cholesterol.
  • Cancer – grapefruit contains bioflavonoids which has been found to go as far as even halting cancer cells from spreading in breast cancer patients, by ridding the body of excess estrogen. Pink and red grapefruits contain high amounts of  lycopene which is an important antioxidant known for lowering the risk of prostate cancer while the anti-cancer agents in grapefruit (especially in the albedo) are particularly protective against cancers in the digestive system.
  • The common cold – drinking grapefruit will boost your immune system (especially in times of stress) to prevent the cold ever starting while the bitter properties of grapefruit can remove the burning sensation of fever and provide an excellent remedy for the flu. Besides drinking plenty of fluids, also drink grapefruit juice to reduce fever while a freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice helps relieve sore throats and soothes coughs.
  • Constipation – this is the cause of so many conditions such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures so eat the fruit together with its albedo and pith for their extra fiber that aids bowel movements.
  • Diabetes – the good news about grapefruit is that a diabetic can safely eat it; in fact more consumption of this fruit will help reduce the starches and sweets in the system. Eating grapefruit can help people lose weight which in turn decreases the risk for diabetes.
  • Digestive disorders – this juice helps to promote digestion by increasing the flow of gastric juices, aiding that special enzyme in the intestines that is responsible for the natural breakdown and absorption of many medications which are the source of toxins.
  • Fatigue – the perfect “pick me up” at the end of a long and tiring day, drink a glass of grapefruit juice with lemon juice in equal parts with a little honey and it will dispel all fatigue and tiredness. No need for any alcohol!
  • Insomnia – a drink of grapefruit juice before bedtime can help to promote sleep and alleviate insomnia.
  • Pregnancy - the bioflavonoids and vitamin C help to reduce water retention and swelling of the legs during pregnancy.
  • Weight-loss – grapefruit has a fat-burning enzyme that can help to absorb and reduce the starch and sugar in the body making it popular with those who are trying to lose weight.

When buying grapefruits, or perhaps even picking them off a tree, choose in the same way as you would oranges so that they are firm and springy to the touch. The pink and red varieties have extra benefits and are slightly sweeter. When eating or juicing grapefruit, peel off the skin but leave as much of the albedo intact as possible, as it contains the highest amount of valuable bioflavonoids and other anti-cancer agents. The skin can be grated for citrus zest in cooking or baking. Keep grapefruits at room temperature before juicing to get the most out of them. If you find the grapefruit juice too bitter or sour, mix with a little honey or with juices of other sweeter fruits.

Grapefruit contains high levels of flavonoid naringin that will reject synthetic man-made drugs

While this is beneficial for our human cells because it helps to recognize alien compounds which should not be in our body, it may halt the metabolism of these drugs, leaving the drugs in your body and thus creating the risk of toxic poisoning. Of course, doctors may tell you that grapefruit is the cause of the toxicity, but of course it is really the drugs that are causing the toxicity while the grapefruit is recognizing the fact and trying to get rid of them as toxins!

If you are not under medication, regular but not excessive grapefruit juice can do you a world of good.
