Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are like the varicose veins you might find on your legs, and when these bulging veins are irritated, they cause the surrounding membranes to swell up. They might burn or itch or become very painful and even bleed.
Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum. The walls of the veins are stretched by the amount of blood contained in them and these walls sometimes rupture. Once these hemorrhoids have occurred, there can be a recurring weakness. They can be either internal or external hemorrhoids.
It is difficult to see or know you have an internal hemorrhoid unless they become prolapsed – that is poking out through the anus. An image of a prolapsed internal hemorrhoid will clearly show this.
External hemorrhoids usually appear as soft lumps in bunches but they may become hard if thrombosis occurs. There is mucus covering to these piles and this can become damaged quite easily from a bowel movement which might cause some bleeding. Occasionally, there is severe bleeding. These three types of hemorrhoids - external, thrombosed external hemorrhoids and bleeding hemorrhoids are also clearly visible in hemorrhoids photos.
When the internal hemorrhoids are small, they are not usually painful. It is when a hard lump starts to protrude from the anus, signaling thrombosis, that a severe pain can be felt. Hemorrhoids can be extremely itchy but at all costs avoid the temptation to scratch as this will only aggravate the problem.
