Believe it or not even babies have acne. In fact
acne or small
pimples is quite common among babies. Often there
are red bumps seen on the beautiful face or the neck
of the ‘just born’ and through many parents
tend to get worried on what these really are, there
is nothing to worry really, because it is just acne.
And sometimes baby acne is also seen on the scalp
of the new born. However in most cases, acne in babies
is not seen immediately after birth – they are
seen normally when the baby is around 4 weeks old.
The acne may appear even when the child is 6 months
of age – it is still referred to as baby acne.

Often baby acne is confused with other skin diseases
such as a rash from diaper or some other item of clothing.
But the real reason is not that. This confusion comes
from the lack of knowledge – most people tend
to think that acne affects mostly teens. While that
is correct to some extent, but even older people and
babies can also have this skin disease.
No one is as yet quite sure as to the exact reasons
for this, but there are quite a few theories. Often
it is believed that there is a connection with the
medical condition of the mother and what she passes
on to the baby. For example, the medicines the mother
is taking might influence hormonal changes in her
body and this might have been passed on to the baby,
cuasing hormonal
acne. It might even be passed on even after birth
through breast milk. Or the baby might be himself
taking some medicines and this could be causing the
baby acne as a side effect.
The condition can also be caused from saliva, or
spit out milk and even from a cloth that has been
washed using a harsh detergent. It needs to be kept
in mind that the skin of the baby is extremely sensitive
and can react to even the slightest things.
Normally it doesn’t stay for long. Even a baby
has a natural immunity and so the power to fight back
is there from birth. In most cases, baby acne goes
away naturally quickly in just a few days. But there
are cases when this is not so. In such cases, baby
acne can stay on for even months, and when that happens,
urgent medical attention is desirable. Interestingly,
baby acne is seen more in boys than in girls.
There is nothing much that needs to be done as the
acne will go away on its own. But if it stays on,
then medical attention is desirable. Baby acne is
not a very serious condition as it will cause no other
problem and will also cause no inconvenience such
as pain and itching for the baby. In fact, the baby
will hardly realize that he has acne – it is
just the parents who are worried.
Jut ensure that the clothing is clean and refrain
from using oil too much as this complicates the issue
for that reason.
