There is a great deal of misconception about acne
or pimples, especially body acne. One is that, acne
can happen only in the face. Actually in reality,
the lesions of acne can come up almost anywhere in
the body. When they are seen in the groin area it
is referred to as genital
acne, and when they are anywhere else (other than
the face), they are known as body acne. There is basically
no difference between acne and body acne (it is just
that the location of the pimples are not in the face
but are in the body). And since they appear on the
body – it is also referred to as back
acne or ‘bacne’.

Body acne can appear almost anywhere including the
shoulders, the back, neck, chest and even in the buttock
area. But the neck is particularly sensitive, as body
acne is frequently seen in the neck area. The causes
of body acne are also the same as acne – they
come up when the skin pores get clogged and this leads
to whiteheads and blackheads, from overproduction
of the glands and excessive perspiration. It has been
seen that those who stay in hot regions such as the
tropics report more cases of acne in the body and
this is precisely due to this. Acne can also happen
from a lack in personal hygiene.
Sebum causes our skin to remain moisturized and when
there is an increase in the production of sebum from
the when extra sebum (the oily substance that moisturizes
our skin) is produced by the sebaceous gland, it blends
with the cells of the skin and ends up choking the
pores. This in turn attracts bacteria, which causes
body acne.
Much like acne on the face, body acne is also seen
in both males and females and in people of all ages.
But there is some difference between the two and that
is, though facial acne does not generally create any
discomfort that is not the case with body acne. Pimples
that come up in the body are buried under clothing
and this naturally creates friction leading to a whole
world of problems. It leads to pain (it can become
quite severe actually) and the lesions may crack open
to excrete some liquid. This is not a good sign as
the acne can become more severe when this happens.
So it best to avoid wearing tight fitting clothing.
Facial acne can cause scars that take a long time
to heal and so there are social implications as the
look of the individual might get changed. Young people
find it particularly difficult to adjust to acne scars
on the face. But since body acne is not open to the
public eye (due to the body being hidden under the
clothing), it does not come with such problems. It
is just that the person might shy away from visiting
the beach, the swimming pool or the common shower.
But it needs to be remembered that body acne can
be treated quite easily and the problem is temporary
in nature. So there is nothing serious to worry about.
