What is common to Bill Clinton; Diana, Princess of Wales and millions of other
less famous people across the world? They have all
got Rosacea.
Very often we come across people whose face look
redder than it ought to be. There are those who think
that it is natural and these people are just from
some other part of the world – at least their
ancestors belonged somewhere else, and so it is in
their genes. But that is not the case. This condition
is referred to as Rosacea, and this is actually a
skin disease that affects a huge section of the white
population (mainly those living in north western Europe).
But according to estimates, as many as 45 million
people are affected by this skin disease, including
14 million Americans.

Why does Rosacea affect so many people in the US?
This has to do something with the millions of baby
boomers who are entering a critical stage of their
lives. Rosacea mainly affects people who are above
the age of 50, and with as many as 77 million who
qualify as baby boomers, as many as 33% of them are
at risk of getting the disease. But Rosacea can also
happen in younger people. In fact according to the
National Rosacea Society survey, 44% of all reported
cases first had the symptoms when they were between
the age of 30 and 40. Another interesting observation
is that, the symptoms of Rosacea are seen more in
women than in men.
As mentioned earlier, this is a skin disease whose
symptoms are seen on the face. It causes facial redness
and look similar to pimples or acne.
There are many theories behind the causes of Rosacea.
Some believe that it is caused by a disorder of the
blood vessels, which swells the vessels that are in
the facial region. Then there are those who believe
that it is caused by a gastrointestinal system bacterial
infection. There is also a third theory and this is
that Demodex folliculorum or tiny mites that stay
in the hair follicles obstruct the gland openings
and this leads to Rosacea. Though there are many theories,
but as yet, no one is quite certain which one of them
actually causes the disease.
Symptoms of the disease include redness in the face;
a burning sensation in the eyes; small bumps on the
cheeks, chin, nose and forehead that are red in color;
blood vessels getting noticeable on the cheeks and
the nose; a bulbous and red nose.
Though Rosacea is otherwise not a very serious condition,
but it is dangerous to keep it left untreated because
Rosacea can lead to serious complications. This skin
disease has been known to progress to telangiectasia,
semi-permanent erythema, vision problems and other
conditions.
Some people confuse Rosacea with acne, and proceed
with the same line of treatment. But these two are
different diseases and so, it is necessary not to
mix them up.
