Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease that
is caused by the human papilloma virus or HPV. The main
symptoms of the disease are small growths that appear
in the genital regions in both men and women. These
growths are flesh colored and become visible either
in clusters or just single growths in the shaft of the
penis, vagina (both inside and outside) and the anus.
Genital
warts appear mostly in men and women who are between
the age of 17 and 33. However even seniors and children
can have the disease. In children, the virus is not
passed through sex, but through skin to skin contact.
Genital warts spread through sexual contact (regular,
oral and anal) with an affected person. Though not
all have them after a contact, but as many as 60%
to 70% develop the symptoms of genital warts. In fact,
genital warts is among the most common sexually transmitted
diseases in the US and elsewhere as well. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that
as many as 6.2 million new cases are reported every
year.
