A sexually transmitted disease or STD, genital warts
are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and
it is highly contagious. A person can only get the
virus from another affected person through regular,
anal or oral sex. No the disease does not spread from
sharing the bed or from the toilet seat as some people
do believe. But nevertheless, HPV infections are quite
common and do affect both men and women, but it has
been seen that the symptoms are not as obvious in
men as they are in women. In men the symptoms (they
may appear in clusters and the growths resemble a
cauliflower) are seen on the penis, in the buttocks
and the anus, in the urethra and even on the inside
of the thighs. Sometimes genital warts are also seen
on the facial region, but these are rarer.
It is not always possible to properly diagnose male
genital warts. That is because sometimes there might
be no symptoms at all – but at these times too,
the man might be carrying the virus within the body.
And at other times the symptoms are noticed within
2 to 3 weeks of an infestation. Also, there are many
other diseases that look similar to the eruptions
that appear from the HPV virus that causes male genital
warts and female genital warts. Fordyce spots, Tyson's
glands, pearly penile papules and lymphoceles all
look much the same as male genital warts. There are
other conditions as well such as skin tags, secondary
syphilis and hemorrhoids, and all of them do also
look like male genital
warts. At least there are many similarities. And
so often the correct diagnosis can become confusing.
So for best results, it is always advisable to go
to a doctor whenever the growths are noticed in the
penis region or around it. After all, he has a trained
eye – self examination and diagnosis is not
recommended.
