Millions of people all over the world are affected
by the herpes simplex virus. While in most of the
cases, the affected parts of the body are the face
and the mouth, in at least 10% of the cases, the genitalia
of the men and the women are also affected. According
to the latest research on the subject, a vast majority
of people will suffer from the herpes disease at least
once in their lifetime as a result of the herpes simplex
virus. And in many (those who have a poor immune system),
the disease often makes a comeback. Interestingly,
in as many as 25% of all herpes cases, there are no
symptoms at all – and in such cases it becomes
really difficult to diagnose properly. And in another
50% of all cases, there are symptoms, but they are
very mild, and these cases are difficult to diagnose
as well. So when we consider all these hidden cases
of herpes as well, we are looking at a huge number
of cases worldwide.

The herpes disease is caused by the Herpes Simplex
Virus. It is also known as HSV. The common symptoms
of the disease include watery blisters that appear
on the affected parts – these blisters almost
look like the one’s that are seen when someone
has chicken pox. These blisters may also come with
swollen glands and even a slight fever. Normally it
takes about 2 weeks for the symptoms of Herpes Simplex
Virus to appear after the person has got the infection.
And the symptoms of Herpes Simplex Virus stay on for
about 2 weeks more.
The Herpes Simplex Virus has been classified into
2 types – HSV 1 and HSV 2. While HSV 1 causes
the cold sore or the fever blisters disease, HSV 2
causes the genital herpes illness. In cold sore, the
affected body parts include the face, the lips, inside
of the mouth, and even the eyes in some rare cases.
On the other hand, the Herpes Simplex Virus type 2
affects the genitals of men and women namely the penis,
the vagina, the butt, anus, and the inner thigh region.
Both HSV 1 and HSV 2 are extremely contagious, but
they can spread only through a sexual contact with
an affected person. It can be through regular, oral
or anal sex, and seldom pass on through sharing the
same bed, clothes or the toilet seat. So two people
(one infected and the other not) can stay together
and if they do not engage in sex, then it is possible
that the one who does not have the virus will never
get it.
The Herpes Simplex Virus has been known to return
and make a person get the illness time and again.
In many cases, the virus enters the body at a young
age and causes an outbreak and then remains dormant
for a long time, before finally becoming active again
suddenly. It has been estimated that the Herpes Simplex
Virus becomes active again due to some triggers.
