Is How We Use Make-Up Changing Drastically?
What are the reasons for this?
- The uptake of social distancing.
- The number of people who have been working from home or only going into the workplace once or twice a week.
- The wearing of masks.
For obvious reasons: if you are at home more than before; you are not getting so close to others; or you spend much of your day hidden behind a mask - then you will perhaps consider make-up not as important as before.
In fact, a spokesperson from L'Oreal (the world's largest cosmetics company) has said that trends had been gradually gathering steam (even before the pandemic) including subtle "no-make-up make-up" or going completely barefaced. Consumers are now looking for a more subtle or natural-looking make-up - changes that could well prove permanent.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Estee Lauder announced that the company's "lipstick index" theory - which was that consumers would continue to treat themselves to the make-up bag staple even during times of economic turbulence - was no longer reliable given the number of shoppers who had stopped buying the product.
What about those eyes?
The use of eye make-up has not been affected so drastically with mask-wearers deciding to accentuate the eyes instead of the rest of the face.
The change to skin-care treatments rather than cosmetics
We are increasingly turning our attention to skin-care lines instead - another way to more naturally boost our appearance without necessarily applying make-up on top.
