In the 1950s, a dark regular mole on the cheek was considered to be a very attractive attribute and girls would pencil in their own facial mole. The film actress Elizabeth Taylor would often appear with one. These were called "beauty spots". Cindy Crawford (super model of the 80s and 90s) brought back the fashion with her signature mole on the face close to her mouth. This was the genuine item.
What are moles?
Moles are usually small, dark, skin growths that develop from pigment-producing cells in the skin but they can be flesh-colored or yellow-brown; they can be raised off the skin and very noticeable; or they may contain dark hairs. Having hairs in a mole does not make it more dangerous but it does look rather unattractive. Special cells that contain the pigment melanin cause the brown color of most moles.
Skin moles can appear anywhere on the body including the armpits, the back and even in the groin area – wherever we have skin. Moles are extremely common and everyone has at least one mole on their body while some have up to 40 moles. Most moles are harmless and don’t have to be removed but many people who have moles on the face feel they are unattractive and so for cosmetic reasons, do want them to be removed.
Facial moles usually get more attention than moles elsewhere
This is why skin mole removal is of importance. If you have them, you may well want to know how to get rid of them
If you want to remove moles, there are various ways
- Laser mole removal is a fairly new procedure which is effective for small facial moles. There is slight discomfort with about a 70% success rate and scarring is possible. It is not the method of choice for deep facial moles because the laser light does not penetrate deeply enough.
- Surgery is another method to remove moles either by excision followed by stitches, or excision with cauterization to burn away the mole. There is some pain involved and the procedure may result in a scar.
- One of the best home remedies in our opinion for mole removal is a healing natural oils product called H-Moles. This is an effective, gentle and safe way to remove moles. Made from highest quality essential oils, only a few drops are needed per application to start the removal process. This treatment will draw out the moles with no burning or skin irritation so that they flake away without any scarring.
Most moles are benign and do not give any cause for concern
However, sometimes suspicious moles rear their ugly heads and these are the moles that have the potential to turn into melanoma
or at worst, have already turned into melanoma. If we have suspicious moles anywhere on our body, we need to get an urgent diagnosis to rule out the possibility of cancerous moles
Normal moles are usually small (less than a quarter of an inch in diameter) with well defined borders and they are all one color
Dermatologists have developed a criteria for suspicious moles and this is known as the ABCDEs and stands for asymmetry, border, color, diameter and elevation.
It is useful to remember this when checking your skin on a regular basis.
