The health benefits are numerous but top of the list is the high fiber helping to combat constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and of course hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Even some life threatening conditions like colon cancer and coronary heart disease can be caused by a diet that is too low in fiber while a diet rich in fiber helps to lower cholesterol and assists with diabetes and obesity. All oats whether in flakes or groats form have gone through a heat process which gives them their rich nutty flavor while keeping them from spoiling. Fortunately the hulling process does not strip away all the bran and germ allowing them to retain a concentrated source of fiber and nutrients.

There are many different levels of processing of oatmeal. Remember that generally the larger the “flake” (as in rolled oats) or the bigger the “seed” or “groat” (as in steel cut oats) – the less processed it will be; the more nutrients it will retain and the slower it will be to digest.   • Make your own oatmeal scrub at home for a natural face pack and to counteract the acne condition and other skin problems by grinding two tablespoons of oatmeal into a powder in a blender. Add one teaspoon of baking soda and 2 cup of water to make a thick paste. Spread on a clean, dry face and rinse off after 15 minutes with chilled water. Alternatively, you can use left over oatmeal that has been made for breakfast. Oatmeal is good for absorbing and removing both oil and bacteria from the skin while exfoliating dead skin cells at the same time.
  • An oatmeal bath can be very useful to treat various skin conditions where itching is a problem, such as poison ivy, chicken pox or sunburn. Grind those oats into a fine powder and pour into a makeshift pouch such as the cut off foot and part of the leg of an old pantyhose. Tie it in a knot around the faucet or bath tap so that the bath water runs through it. You can give the pouch a good squeeze from time to time. An alternative is to rub that same wet pouch straight on to the problem areas of skin.
  • An extra special oatmeal bath with a cup of milk, 2 cups of oats and tablespoon of honey added to the bath water will help to both moisturize your body and relax the stress and tension. Or add a few drops of soothing essential oils such as lavender to that oatmeal pouch for a different relaxation bath.
  • Oatmeal for hair care? This is a recipe for a natural dry shampoo which can be very useful in times of illness or for any other reason that hair cannot be washed in the normal way. Mix baking soda or cornstarch in equal quantities with ground up oatmeal. Then rub into the hair to let it soak up any excess oils and odors before brushing out again and seeing the difference.
  • Just as we suffer from skin problems so too can our pets. If your dog has dry and itchy spots, mix equal parts oats and warm water before rubbing lightly over the affected area. Cover with aluminium and try to keep your dog still for at least 10 minutes (you will know best how you can achieve this!) before rinsing with warm water. Keep repeating until the itchiness has cleared up.
