When the colder months of the year start to arrive, so do the germs - often leading to coughs, colds and sore throats.
Unfortunately, many still think that they need to start a course of antibiotics to treat their symptoms. In most cases, acute coughs are caused by a cold or flu virus or bronchitis - and can last as long as three weeks. But antibiotics make little difference to symptoms and can even have side effects.
has of course become a modern world wide problem.
Instead of resorting to over-the-counter and prescription drugs to get rid of bad coughs and other symptoms, raw honey can be your first line of defence.
Why you should use real raw honey
We share how you can be sure your raw honey is authentic here.
Avoiding processed products is always the healthier option when choosing food - and raw honey is no exception.
Raw honey has been neither heated nor filtered but, unless you see the term RAW on a honey label, you can assume that it’s processed. Most honeys, including pure and natural ones, are treated to prevent fermentation and preserve it in a liquid state in order to keep them from crystallizing. These techniques make a product that can be more appealing to some consumers because this is what they have grown used to expecting.
However, raw honey has so many more health benefits including a superior taste, extra enzymes, more antioxidants plus the ability to relieve allergies while soothing and treating the symptoms of coughs and more.
What causes your cough and how can honey help?
When your mucus membranes are inflamed with an irritated throat reflex, the response can be coughing.
So how can honey help?
Honey is a demulcent (a substance that can form a thick sticky film over the inflamed mucus membranes) helping to settle the irritation. It is important that the honey used is thick and sticky!
Remembering to use honey in the early stages of a cough can help to relieve the inflammation quickly so that a child or an adult stands a better chance of recovering quickly.
Make your very own honey and lemon throat lozenges
In an earlier post, we shared how to make your honey and lemon throat lozenges
Raw honey (especially when combined with lemon and even garlic) is a good way to boost your immune system which is at the heart of our very well-being, helping us to fight off most diseases and conditions that come our way while a weakened immune system makes us very vulnerable.
Holistic medicine recognizes that illness is not caused by viruses and bacteria but by weakened immune systems while mainstream medicine will promote flu vaccines
at the beginning of winter instead.
Boost your immune system
A strong immune system is at the heart of our very well-being – we can fight off most diseases and conditions that come our way. But if our immune system is weakened for whatever reason, we become very vulnerable.
There are many ways to strengthen the immune system
The foods that boost immunity contain Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Carotenoids, Bioflavenoids, Zinc, Selenium and Omega-fatty acids. Spirulina is good as a naturally digestible food because it supplies so many of the nutrients you need.
You can find out about the other ways to boost your immune system to avoid coughs, colds and flu in our earlier post here
When mainstream health changes their mind
While Public Health England admit that antibiotics may be necessary to treat coughs in patients with pre-existing conditions (including lung disease, immuno-suppression or cystic fibrosis), they too are advising regular patients suffering from coughs to turn to honey for treatment.
That is a huge turnaround!
