We might want to bury our heads in the sand and hope that the problems of our planet are just going to go away but earth is our only home – there is no planet B that we can move to when everything goes wrong – we are here whatever happens.
Changing to being more eco-friendly has spin-offs beyond the obvious. As we become more environmentally aware, our personal awareness grows too. We become more rounded and balanced.
If we love the earth, we are more likely to love ourselves
1. Turn away from the material world
– instead of having to have the latest trend in furniture, gadgets and clothing – think about creating your own unique style that reflects your personality by giving an existing item a new lease on life.
2. Up cycling
an older item will have health benefits too – no off gassing, fire retardants and other chemicals to affect you.
3. How about having one night a week as electricity-free
night? Slow cook a meal all day long ready to serve that night if it is winter time and you need a hot comfort food or find a recipe to create a special raw food supper especially if it is summertime. Eat and play by candlelight and after supper, get out the board games or packs of card as a welcome change from watching TV – a novelty for all the family.
4. Go raw
more often and join the popular and healthy movement for increased energy levels and an improved sense of well being.
5. Growing your own vegetables and herbs
makes it even easier to go raw – nothing tastier than a freshly picked young radish or carrot straight out of the ground.
6. When you grow or buy organic
, you are safe to eat the whole fruit and vegetable after a quick scrub and a wash for added health benefits and lots of extra fiber.
7. You can save electricity too by cooking with cast iron pots and pans
that last a lifetime – they retain so much heat once they are hot that you can switch off the power and leave food to cook in the generated heat.
8. Another electricity saver is a stacking steamer
so that you can layer the food you cook. More healthy too as the nutrients are not lost from your food.
9. When you choose your fresh fruit and vegetables, go for local
and with the least amount of packaging.
10. Instead of reaching for the bottle of pills every time you feel less than well, think about finding the cause of your ailment and then treating naturally
. Fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs can so often be the solution rather than those pills that provide a temporary band aid.
11. Those same bottle of pills along with tons of pharmaceuticals end up being flushed into water supplies
. Always ensure such items are properly disposed of so as not to harm our natural eco systems.
12. It is only the western world that is so reliant on pharmaceuticals while many other parts of the world still turn to traditional medicine using native species. However, over harvesting puts medicinal species a risk. Learn about the medicinal properties of herbs
and other plants and then see what you can do about growing your own. You will be proud of such an accomplishment.
13. Avoid bottled water
for a number of reasons. Lots of energy wasted in producing plastic bottles which can be toxic and leach chemicals; more energy wasted in travelling long distances for the bottled water to be delivered to your local supplier; and then the end result is no healthier than filtered tap water. So what is the point? The only use I can see is during an emergency situation.
14. Clear out the clutter
to give your home a cleaner, more eco-friendly look. Have 3 large boxes ready and labelled “sell”, “donate” and “recycle or trash” to make it easier for you to sort out room by room.
15. Less stuff in your home
means less to clean, less to worry about, less to repair and less to trip over.
16. Go around at bedtime and switch off any unnecessary electrical appliances
, gadgets and lights – every little bit helps.

18. Eat less meat
and the smaller amount that you consume should be grassfed, organic or free range so that you eat more healthily and save money too. The factory farming of livestock is inhumane and contributing to climate change, polluting water resources and destroying biodiversity.
19. Are you using the sun at every opportunity. Apart from solar heating, the sun is a free resource to dry your freshly laundered clothing, to air your pillows and duvets and just to enjoy and top up your vitamin D levels.
20. Resolve to only use a dryer for clothing if absolutely necessary
. Summer months means laundry dries quickly and even a sunny day in winter will take away the worst of the wet so that perhaps only a few minutes are necessary in the dryer to finish off your laundry, saving money as well as energy.
21. Be more eco-friendly about the personal products and toiletries
you use – go for the natural ones whether toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, skin products or deodorant.
22. Changing to energy saving light bulbs for the past few years has been the norm but an about turn might be necessary – incandescent bulbs are so much safer

23. You might be worrying about your weight and wishing you had the time to work out but there is the perfect opportunity to exercise right there in your own home
. Forget the energy-guzzling appliances and gadgets – sweep the floors, beat the eggs, whip the cream, mix the batter and more using your own super power!
24. That same power and energy can be put to good use for walking or peddle pushing
instead of driving a car when the opportunity is there.
25. Aim for a chemical and toxin free home
by ridding your space of artificial fragrances in spray bottles, electric plug ins and even candles. Look for products that are free of such artificial fragrances or better still, make your own.
26. If you can eliminate all the toxic chemicals
in your home environment, you will help to ease pollution and create a healthier earth.
27. Are you still using the toxic “Roundup”
in your garden or yard? Even if you have changed to all organic in your own space, have your thought about what is used at your children's school or by your local council in public spaces? You can make a stand about change in these areas of concern.
