We All Want to Have Sweet Smelling Breath!
Many will worry about whether they suffer from bad breath and often they will resort to using mouthwash or sucking on mints.
But perhaps it is better to get to the bottom of what is causing bad breath - and then work from there in finding solutions - naturally.
Some suggestions for natural remedies to combat bad breath
- A warm salt water rinse is useful in preventing the build up of infectious bacteria in the mouth or the throat when the salt water’s slight acidity prevents the ‘alkalizing’ environment that encourages the growth of microbes that cause bad breath. Mix a generous spoonful of natural salt in a glass of warm water and use it to gargle several times. Repeat two or three times throughout the day.
- Zinc is an important trace element your body and is said to stop the buildup of volatile sulfur compounds or VSCs that can cause bad breath. One suggestion is to use a zinc mouthwash.
- Digestive enzymes may help to resolve digestive problems which can in turn lead to bad breath. Digestive enzyme products can include HCL with pepsin,bromelain and papain (found in pineapple) or other plant-sourced ones from probiotics, yeast, and fungi.
- Another suggestion is cinnamon chewing sticks. While cinnamon is known to have antimicrobial action, it has been found to be effective against the bacteria that cause oral infections and these chewing sticks contain fiber that works well to support microbial diversity in the mouth.
- Drinking 3 to 5 cups of green tea will reduce bad breath because of its antibacterial and deodorant action. This is probably due to the actions of the polyphenols in green tea.
- Aloe Vera is a natural antifungal and antibacterial plant extract. A homemade Aloe Vera mouthwash is a useful way to combat bad breath. Add some aloe Vera gel to cooled boiled water. A couple of drops of Peppermint oil is a popular addition.
- Is your body getting sufficient oxygen? Your body is not designed to breathe through the mouth but through the nose. Your nasal passages are specially designed to release nitric oxide to increase blood flow and delivery of oxygen to the cells. In contrast, mouth breathing pulls cold, dry air to the lungs resulting in less oxygen being delivered to your body. In addition, mouth breathing can also reduce saliva flow and allow unwanted microbiota into your mouth and throat. To get rid of morning breath, train your body to breathe through your nose especially at night. You can achieve this by using a strip to keep your mouth closed at night.
- Hydration is important too. Drinking plenty of water will help maintain saliva flow, keeping the mouth moist and discouraging bacterial growth. At the same time, cut down on diuretics such as coffee, black tea and alcohol which will increase fluid loss and may cause dry mouth.
- Good oral hygiene practice helps to stop nasty bacteria from building up on the gums and teeth. This includes interdental cleaning with floss and brushing the tongue. The presence of bacteria on the tongue (a white coating for example) can be the cause of bad breath.
- Increasing ventilation and circulation rates can be achieved by regular and daily exercise helping to maintain microbiome health and manage any harmful bugs that can cause bad breath.
- Decreasing stress as stress can change your body’s odor by changing your body's bacteria. The microbiome can lose diversity when exposed to chronic stress.
- Good quality sleep habits are also important as lack of sleep can negatively affect your immune system, the microbiome and stress response. If you are concerned about bad breath, consider investigating your sleep patterns.
- A simple remedy is to chew on lemon rind regularly.
- Something different is to use skin rubs - with essential oils. You might not know that your skin microbiome communicates with your oral microbiome, meaning rubbing pleasant-smelling essential oils on your skin could have a positive effect on bad breath. Add to your bath or rub in diluted to the skin (by adding a few drops to a damp cloth). Tea Tree Oil is well known essential oil and Lavender Oil will leave your skin smelling fresh.
