How To Avoid Stretch Marks During Pregnancy & At Other Times

Added December 10, 2017, Under: How To, New Moms, Pregnancy, Skin Conditions

The first rule to avoid those stretch marks is to stay hydrated and keep your skin moisturized!

Staying hydrated is good for your body all round, helping to prevent stretch marks by giving your skin enough moisture to stop them appearing when you gain weight or build muscles.

The normal advice is to drink 8 glasses of water every day but the amount you need can vary from person to person – this is because it depends on the food you eat, how much you perspire and how much liquid you take in.

Checking your urine can be a good way to gauge whether you are taking in enough liquid  – it should be the very palest of yellow.

We love coconut oil and it is a great way to moisturize your skin by exfoliating the outer layer and giving your skin elasticity.  At the same time, this helps to prevent any break in the dermal layer – and the development of stretch marks.  Use coconut oil as a body moisturizer by applying all over your body.

Why do stretch marks appear?

  • During pregnancy and other times of weight or muscle gain (or even loss), any sudden stretching of the dermal layers of the skin can cause stretch marks, appearing as wavy lines along the skin.  The areas most likely to be affected are the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, breasts and sometimes the shoulders – all areas which are more prone to show a rapid increase in size.
  • Hormonal changes can be another cause.  For example, the hormonal imbalance that occurs during pregnancy and puberty alters the production of elastin and collagen.  This can then mean your skin loses its elasticity, resulting in tearing.
  • Another time of risk of stretch marks is during puberty, and when growth spurts occur, leading to the skin being more stretched out than usual.
  • Less well known is as a result of the condition known as Cushing’s syndrome when the body can produce an above normal amount of  cortisol.  Any sudden weight gain or thinning of the skin can lead to the appearance of reddish-purple colored stretch marks.

Natural ways to prevent or reduce the appearance of stretch marks

Exercising regularly –  this will help to keep both your skin taut and your weight in check so that you are more likely to avoid any sudden weight gain or loss.

Eating healthily and in moderation – this means including a balance of good nutrition with extra vitamins and minerals and plenty of water to help you maintain a constant weight without the risk of gaining too much extra weight in a hurry.

Including vitamin E in your daily diet or supplements – vitamin E is the one necessary vitamin for taking care of skin health while it preserves the collagen in the skin, helping to maintain its elasticity.

Avoiding alcohol –  this is because alcohol exacerbates any existing dehydration problems as well as actually removing some of the moisture from your body so that your skin will become more dryer than normal, increasing the risk of stretch mark formation.

Using our own H-Stretch Marks Formula – this works gently and effectively when you massage onto the abdomen, breasts, buttocks and thighs to improve the appearance of stretch marks so that your skin regains its previous tone and texture.  The all natural high quality essential oils will be absorbed into the skin, soothing rapidly expanding tissues while promoting skin elasticity and suppleness. It is gentle and topically applied three times per day.

And finally, remembering about the importance of staying hydrated and keeping your skin moisturized – as mentioned right at the beginning of this post.
