Dragons are the mythical, magical, scaled, horned and winged creatures that frighten and thrill adults and children alike.

We might even rationalize that they could have once existed – dinosaurs with wings – and we know dinosaurs were real.

But if we cannot have the real dragon, we can have the very dramatic looking dragon fruit with its surprisingly subtle and gentle taste that no one could dislike.

And if your children are fussy eaters, the thought of dragon fruit could well whet their appetites!

The dragon  fruit is a highly nutritious fruit being rich in fiber, magnesium as well as several vitamins and minerals.

But it is also very low in calories.

Health benefits of including dragon fruit in your diet

Dragon fruit comes in different bright colors!

Some have pink peel, with green scales and white flesh (filled with tiny but edible black seeds) while others have yellow peel with white flesh.  Yet others have pink or deep magenta-colored flesh.

 

 How to eat dragon fruit

  • Select a ripe fruit with bright red, evenly colored skin that gives slightly when squeezed.
  • Use a sharp knife and cut straight through the fruit, slicing it in half.
  • You can peel of the outer red skin, leaving just a thin layer of red before cutting into slices.
  • You can use a spoon to eat the fruit out of the skin or if you peel off all the skin, cut the fruit into small pieces to serve with Greek yogurt and chopped nuts or to include in a fruit salad.
