How Important is Genuine Gelatin for Improved Joint Health? | Amoils.com

If you are not so young any more and you feel those knee joints playing you up (or even hip or back problems) consider taking gelatin as a natural remedy for improving joint health. Gelatin is made from collagen and is thought to help rebuild the cartilage in affected areas.

Collagen is the major structural protein in connective tissue and is the most abundant protein in the human body. In fact, when you put some of these together – gelatin/collagen/bone-cartilage soups/lysine/proline plus vitamins C and E – they become connective tissues including joints, ligaments, tendons, bone, skin, nails, blood vessels and more.

Apart from improving joint health, gelatin has a list of other health benefits too

  • Improving hair and skin
  • Soothing the digestive tract
  • Containing many essential and non-essential amino acids including arginine and glycine
  • Being a natural anti-inflammatory
  • Stimulating the immune system

Gelatin is an animal product found naturally in the hoofs, bones, skin and collagen of animals. In the past, it was a key part of our diet, used in so many recipes when baking and, of course, comes off the bones naturally in things like bone broths. The demise of so many dishes has left gelatin sorely lacking from our diet.

Of course when we say gelatin, it must be high quality genuine gelatin and not something like Jello which would really not do the job with its sugar, artificial color dye, chemical additives and probably originating from factory lot animals who have to eat GMO feed.

A good quality brand would be one like Great Lakes gelatin.

You can do this by simply simmering a chicken in a pot of lightly boiling water on the stove. Once cooked, place the pot in the refrigerator over night and in the morning, the pot will have a layer of lard at the top, gelatin (whitish looking) under the lard and the chicken under that. What could be easier? Enjoy a chicken for your supper and you get the gelatin as a bonus.

In addition, eating gelatin provides you with all those amino acids that, once digested, will nourish your joints.

Cartilage loss in your knees, and one of the hallmarks of osteoarthritis, is associated with low levels of vitamin D

So if you’re struggling with joint pain due to osteoarthritis, get your vitamin D levels tested.  Yes, I know I have suggested testing many times before but I cannot over-stress its importance!

Sunlight exposure is always the best option to raise those vitamin D levels – using those two hours either side of noon to expose as much skin as possible until it starts to turn pink. Repeat several times during the week, remembering that the darker your skin, the longer you need in the sun. If this is not possible, especially in colder climates, supplement with oral vitamin D3 along with vitamin K2.

Sulfur is another substance that plays an important role in the structure and biological activity of both proteins and enzymes

If there is a deficiency, the resulting health problems can impact your joints and connective tissues. Make sure to eat plenty of sulfur-rich foods including organic and grass-fed beef and free range poultry. You can also counteract any sulfur deficiency by having a good soak in a bath with magnesium sulfate (known as Epsom salt) a couple of times per week. Use about ¼ of a cup to help with joint problems or arthritis.
