Is Beauty Just Skin Deep or Is There More to it? | Amoils.com

We all want to have a glowing, good skin but many people do not realize that their food choices play a huge part in boosting, protecting and supporting their skin. Just as important as what you put on your skin is what you put in your mouth.

There are several foods and beverages that are paramount to giving your skin the best possible chance of being at its best, including:

Coconut Oil

This is the new kid on the block and provides excellent skin aid whether used internally or externally.With its antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, coconut oil is thought to help strengthen mineral absorption, which is important for healthy teeth and bones, while also helping improve the condition and appearance of the scalp, hair and skin when ingested or topically applied. You can just eat a teaspoon or two every day from a jar (like I do) or use as a spread or in baking.

Vitamin C

This a wonderful healing vitamin and everyone needs plenty every day. There are so many fresh fruits and vegetables that contain big helpings of vitamin C that you can easily find your favorites to enjoy on a daily basis. Vitamin C helps your skin to glow and be young looking by keeping the collagen (that supports your skin) strong and healthy to resist that sagging that can come with age. I enjoy slices of lemon in my water or my tea, a daily half a grapefruit as well as papayas for dessert.

Fresh Vegetables

Eat up your veggies – especially a few servings every week of the dark green and leafy ones like spinach, kale, celery leaves and broccoli with their vitamin A to renew healthy cell growth. Most people soon grow to love their veggies especially when lightly steamed. Even better is raw or perhaps juiced with some coconut water and ginger. Experiment to find the recipe that suits your taste. Other ways of getting your regular helpings of these veggies is adding to casseroles, curries or even salads. I try to have at least one meal a day with raw veggies, salads or a veggie/fruit juice.

Sulphur or Sulfur

We don’t often give sulphur much thought but eating those foods that are rich in sulphur is another excellent way to smooth out the appearance of wrinkles in the skin giving you a younger and glowing look. Such foods include parsley, broccoli, cauliflower, onion, garlic, cabbage, walnuts and Brazil nuts so easy ones to add to your daily diet and to boost your sulphur levels at the same time.

Fiber

The skin conditions such as acne, rosacea or psoriasis can be made worse when suffering from constipation or other digestive disorders. Plenty of fiber will help to keep the colon healthy by adding bulk and effecting regular bowel movements. Fiber is found in plenty of different types of food such as brown rice, barley, bran flakes, oatmeal, split peas, lentils, turnips and potato skins and that super veggie that crops up over and over again – broccoli. For a fruity source of fiber, go for apples, pears and bananas. Ground flaxseeds are another great source of fiber and can be used in so many different ways every day.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Two or three helpings of fish every week (but from a safe and sustainable source) should be included in your menu. With their omega-3 fatty acids, fish protect the skin against sunburn. We all need regular sunlight (say 20 minutes every day for optimum vitamin D intake) but we don’t need sunburn. Fish is also rich in protein to build and repair those skin cells while producing enzymes and hormones for glowing skin. The oily fish are the best source but if not possible, then make sure to take an omega-3 fish oil supplement.

There are two beverages that you should include in your quest for skin health:

Water

This is necessary to deliver nutrients to the skin cells, to keep the kidneys functioning properly and to get rid of all those wastes and toxins. You might need to constantly remind yourself to drink your six to eight glasses of pure, filtered water for optimum skin health – I know that when I am especially busy, it is easy to forget. You know when you are taking in enough water if your urine is the palest of yellow.

Green Tea

Another crucial beverage as it contains a potent antioxidant known as EGCG or epigallocatechin-gallate which smooths and rejuvenates the skin by preventing the formation of those inflammatory chemicals found in acne (and in ageing caused by too much sun on the face). You are safe to drink several cups of green tea each day but of course minus the sugar (which is considered to be one of the main causes of premature ageing). An added bonus to drinking green tea is the presence of amino acids, helping to slow the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

You will not go far wrong in looking after your skin if you avoid the processed and refined so called “food” and concentrate on real whole food that is living, fresh and organic (where possible) giving maximum nutritional support to your body and especially your skin.
