Is Chafing Causing You Pain and Discomfort?
When your skin repeatedly rubs against other skin or clothing, it may become red, irritated and downright painful.
Chafing is skin irritation caused by repetitive friction. It happens when our skin is in constant contact with our clothing or our skin. The areas high on the list are the inner thighs followed by the armpits and the nipples.
If the problem is severe, it is known as friction burn.
Why do we get chafing?
There are different reasons…
- Obesity is considered to be the leading cause of thigh chafing.
- Chafing can be caused by clothes that don’t fit properly or are too loose, generating extra friction.
- Athletes who have developed quadriceps can suffer from chafing.
- Those with a tight bone structures can also be at risk.
- Chafing is quite prevalent among long distance athletes such as cyclists or marathon runners because they can spend extensive periods during which the skin is subject to irritating conditions.
- Chafing may be caused by the salt residue left behind after sweat evaporates. If sweat is allowed to dry, and exercise is resumed, the salt may intensify the friction and cause further irritation.
- Other contributing factors include hot weather, sensitive skin, sand from the beach getting into problem areas and prior skin irritation.
What do you look for if you suspect chafing?
The signs are red marks or sore patches, rashes, pain and burning sensations. Another sign is that the affected area stings when it comes in contact with water.
If chafing leads to broken skin, it can increase the risk of infection and more.
Here are some home remedies for dealing with chafing
Apply a cold compress to the affected area as quickly as possible to reduce the redness and relieve irritation. You can do this by wrapping some ice cubes in a thin towel; place on the affected area for five minutes; remove to take a break before reapplying. Repeat a few times daily for a few days.
Oatmeal is full of medicinal properties to clean, moisturize and soothe. Mix one to two cups of oatmeal powder in a bathtub filled with lukewarm water. Soak in it for twenty to thirty minutes before rinsing off your body with lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Repeat once a day.
Baking soda is useful to help reduce the itching and pain associated with chafed skin. Mix one part baking soda and three parts water. You can also add a few drops of lavender oil. Apply the mixture to the affected area and wait five minutes before rinsing it off with cool water. Repeat once daily for a few days.
Turmeric with its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to help protect your chafed skin from infections and reduce healing time. Make a paste by mixing three teaspoons of turmeric powder with enough water (about two tablespoons) before applying the paste to the affected area. Cover the area with a soft cloth and leave for thirty minutes before rinsing it off. Be careful not to stain clothing with the bright orange of this spice. Repeat two or three times a day.
