No one wants to suffer from receding gums. They can look unattractive, they can provide a breeding ground for unwanted bacteria and they can even lead to pain and sensitivity.

If you do not contain receding gums, the roots of teeth may become exposed and painful, making your teeth extremely sensitive. Not only this, due to the damage caused to the supporting tissue and bone structures of teeth, it is possible that a tooth or teeth could even be lost. The process can be very gradual so that you might not even notice it is happening.

The signs of receding gums

  • Sensitivity in the teeth.
  • Teeth appearing to be larger than before.
  • Tooth pain or ache.

The reasons why receding gums appear

  • Gum disease and, in particular, periodontal diseases including bacterial infection in the gums. Unfortunately, damage can be caused to the supporting bone of the tooth and the gums.
  • Neglecting oral hygiene. It is very important to ensure regular brushing of your teeth twice a day and if possible with an electric toothbrush. Flossing should be be done daily to remove any build up of plaque because this can lead to tartar, the name given to a hard substance that causes receding gums.
  • Brushing teeth aggressively. While brushing is so necessary, aggressive brushing can wear away tooth enamel which is another reason for receding gums.
  • Smoking with tobacco causing a sticky plaque on the teeth.
  • The habit of clenching or grinding the teeth as well as extra force used when eating. For example, crooked teeth could be affected when they do not come together evenly while eating.
  • Tongue or lip piercing can also cause gum recession. This is because the jewelry that you wear after piercing can rub against the gums, causing the gum tissue to wear away.
  • Hormonal changes, especially in women, make the gums more sensitive and vulnerable..

Treatment for receding gums

Where the gum recession is in its early stages, natural remedies can help to improve the situation. While it’s not likely to reverse receding gums (bring the gums back to their original state), you can help to prevent further damage.

Regular visits to your dentist for check ups when treatment can commence with root planning or tooth scaling to remove the build up of calculus or plaque from both the teeth or the surface beneath the gum line.

If extensive damage has occurred, surgery may be  necessary. Such surgery includes regeneration of lost tissue and bone of gums and teeth, depth reduction, soft tissue graft and more. Obviously any surgery can be costly and if you can prevent the receding of gums in the first place, this would be first prize.

There are some natural ways to help with receding gums

  • Oil pulling is one such natural remedy and this simple process means that you rinse your mouth out with coconut oil, olive oil or sesame oil.  If done correctly, this can have a very powerful cleansing and healing effect by detoxifying or cleansing the body and of course help with dental problems too.  The first thing that most people notice when they start oil pulling is an improvement in their oral health as their teeth become whiter; their breath becomes fresher; and their tongue and gums take on a healthy pink color.  Go to our earlier post on oil pulling for full instructions.
  • Green tea is full of antioxidants that fight the free radicals that can cause periodontal disease which can lead to receding gums. One antioxidant is catechins which helps by strengthening the connection between the gums and teeth while its anti-inflammatory properties can lower the swelling of the gums that cause oral diseases. Drink a cup of green tea every morning.
  • Eucalyptus contains essential oils with all their health benefits. The essential oil from the eucalyptus can destroy germs and bacteria that live in your mouth. It also has many anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce the swelling in the gums. Remember that this strong oil must be diluted. Take 1 or 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil and 1 or 2 tablespoons of water. Dilute the essential oil in the water and dip your toothbrush or your finger in the dilution. Apply it on your gums and massage it gently. Wash your mouth with water. This will stimulate the growth of new gums and it will prevent receding gums.
  • Clove oil. While commonly used to prevent toothache, the oil also has antiseptic properties to help in the destruction of germs and bacteria in the fight against any oral disease.  Again, its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce the swelling of the gums.  Chew a clove after every meal.

Correct and regular dental hygiene, a good wholesome diet and even home remedies can help your receding gums grow back.
