Summer Sun is Great for your Vitamin D Levels but Hard on your Hair

Being outdoors, enjoying the sun and perhaps spending lots of time swimming and in the water can be especially harsh on your hair.

It is easy to forget about looking after your hair when you are so busy enjoying all those summertime outdoor activities but a few minutes spent in preparation can prevent damage in the long run.

Our top HAIR TIPS to counteract the effects of summer…

1. Have a regular hair trim. This is because (a) many find that their hair grows faster during the summer months and (b) having such a trim helps to get rid of those unsightly split ends while enabling any color treatment to look fresher for longer.

2. Enjoy a deep hair treatment. Ideally, your hair will greatly benefit from a deep treatment once a week for 15 minutes to put back lost moisture and shine – those special things about your hair that the sun, the wind and the sea can rob.

3. Keep your hair well hydrated and glossy by using a natural shampoo and conditioner that you have found suits your hair and its type.  The main cause of frizz in hair (especially in the summer) is dehydration.  If hair is nourished and hydrated, the cuticle (which is the outer layer) will lie flat and smooth but if it is dry or damaged, the cuticle will become rough and the hair unruly. Humidity is a further factor when the extra moisture in the air makes the hair strand expand and so lose its shape.  Heated straighteners, which are used to tame the said frizz, can actually worsen the problem in the long run. 4. Cover your hair to protect from sun, sea and salt. The best way to protect your hair and your face from the sun is to wear a large brimmed hat – this does two jobs in one. Alternatively, cover your hair with a scarf tied at the back or tuck it under a cap, especially when having to be out in windy conditions that might blow off a wide brimmed hat.  Another tip is to use cool or cold water for the final rinse after washing your hair.  This is because, just like the sun, hot water is an enemy of your hair, severely drying it out and leaving it looking damaged and limp. The cooler temperature of the final rinse water will allow each hair cuticle to seal, leading to increased reflecting of light and extra shine while preventing breakage and unsightly split ends.

5. How to wear long hair in the summer months. While the obvious choice is a pony tail or knot on top of the head, French braids are definitely back in style and they work to help keep the hair safe from the elements too, leaving only the conditioned root area exposed while the delicate tips of the hair are safer from the sun.

Four natural treatments for your hair

Hair Oil for a very special treatment

Invest in a special treatment to give your hair an extra boost, and help it to recover from any damage. Our own Simply Hair Oil provides just such a natural treatment. Apply a small amount to the palm of your hand. Then with your fingers, work the oil evenly throughout damp or dry hair. When your hair is towel-dried, you can can again use our Simply Hair Oil to intensify shine and to eliminate frizz.

How to use coconut oil to condition your hair

To get the most out of coconut oilit should be slightly warmed and then massaged gently on the scalp. You can leave it overnight or for at least 1 to 2 hours before washing out with a mild and natural shampoo. Be careful to wash and rinse thoroughly to avoid any oil residue clogging the hair follicles and stopping future hair growth.

For a special deep conditioning treatment, mix together 4 tablespoons of a natural conditioner with 3 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil. Work the mixture into your hair when damp, wrap in a towel and leave for at least 2 hours before washing and rinsing carefully.

Apple cider vinegar for a final rinse treatment

You will need 2 to 4 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and 16 oz water.  You can also add an optional couple drops of essential oil – one that is safe for skin application like lavender oil (for all hair types) or tea tree oil (for oily hair).  Mix carefully in a easy pour jug.

After shampooing and rinsing hair thoroughly, lean your head back while pouring the rinse over your entire scalp, allowing mixture to run through your hair.  Warning!  Be careful to avoid contact with your eyes. When first using this treatment, leave for 30 to 60 seconds.  Later, the mixture can stay in the hair for a couple of minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Start with 2 tablespoons but work up to 4 if you find you are not seeing the results with the lower amount.  In general, dry hair will usually have better results with less apple cider vinegar while those with oily hair or scalp issues (such as dryness) will do better with more apple cider vinegar.  The treatment can normally be used once or twice a week but less often if you have dry or fine hair.

And finally…

Epsom salts as a volumizer

Adding Epsom salts to conditioner can help to rid your hair of excess oil, which can weigh hair down and leave it looking flat. Create your own homemade volumizer by combining equal parts Epsom salts and conditioner. Apply and leave in for 20 minutes before rinsing. Repeat the treatment weekly if necessary.
