I have written about both acne and turmeric in the past but now I am combining the two to bring you a turmeric face mask that can help reduce the symptoms of skin acne and other skin conditions.

Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for over two thousand years in India and the active ingredient in this spice is curcumin but recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, providing health benefits in the treatment of many different health conditions – from cancer to Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin ensures a natural reduction in inflammation in the body but without harming the liver or kidneys. At the same time, supplementing with turmeric increases ligament flexibility and boosts the immune system as well as helping to soothe chronic pain.

You can find turmeric in powder form or you can buy the roots themselves to make your own freshly ground powder. Add regularly to meals, when juicing or sprinkle in your tea.

Acne

Acne vulgaris is the name given to common acne and is a disorder of the sebaceous glands so that when these glands lubricate the skin and become blocked, bacteria overgrows and causes skin blemishes. Acne is well known by its pimples, scaly red skin, blackheads and whiteheads, pinheads and large papules, and even scarring in extreme cases.

However, the number one cause of acne is environmental – especially diet. The spread of bacteria and the growth of inflammation lead to acne but diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates are the main reason for acne. Simply changing to a low-grain or no-grain diet is almost certain to clear up your skin, creating an environment that does not allow bacteria and inflammation to flourish. The worst thing to be prescribed for acne is antibiotics because they will exacerbate any bacterial growth.

Back to our face mask

The anti-bacterial content in turmeric is ideal for working on any acne while turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce the redness of rosacea. Raw honey is both anti-bacterial and moisturizing while the milk in the face mask adds lactic acid to exfoliate the skin.

There is only one drawback to turmeric and that is its strong staining color – you will obviously need to protect anything that is precious from its bright yellow tint!  We also recommend that you first do a skin test by applying a small amount of  the mask onto the inside of your arm and waiting a few minutes.

What you need for your turmeric face mask

  • A small glass bowl and a teaspoon
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid raw honey or regular honey
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon of milk

Mix all three ingredients together in the glass bowl to a thick paste.

Before you apply your face mask, you need to have a clean make-up-free complexion, an old shirt to cover your clothing and the means to safely secure all your hair away from your face (eg shower cap, hair band etc.)

Ready to begin?

Use the back of the teaspoon to apply the paste all over your face while avoiding the eyes and mouth – but remembering to spread well beneath the eyes as this home remedy is ideal for reducing any dark circles.

Let the paste dry for thirty minutes on your skin before removing with warm water and patting dry.

Use your face mask for two nights running and then repeat again every two to three weeks for optimum benefits.

In between, use our own H-Acne Formula for its gentle and safe application to your acne skin outbreaks with its natural blend of plant-based homeopathic and essential oils ingredients.
