Things that make you happyThe first thing to remember is that if you are laughing, you have to be feeling happy so laughter is always the best way to improve your mood. Laughing is contagious so by bringing more laughter into your own life, you will help others around you to laugh more too, reducing your own and their stress levels.

Laughter produces a chemical reaction, instantly elevating your mood, reducing pain and stress while boosting immunity. It is the ultimate medicine.

Laughter reduces stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine while going to work to increase health-enhancing hormones like endorphins and neurotransmitters.

Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T cells. All this means a stronger immune system, as well as fewer physical effects of stress.

Oils that make you happy

Want to feel some extra special happiness and joy? Essential oils can help you with this.

Oils such as orange, rose, jasmine, coriander, clove bud, ginger, cinnamon, ylang ylang, petitgrain and Roman chamomile, bergamot , lemon, frankincense and geranium are often used during celebratory times to make everyone feel happy. In fact you can blend these oils together whether it is a special occasion or a regular day. You really should not need a special occasion to feel happy!

Here is a special happiness and joy blend

You will need to mix together

  • Geranium x 10 drops
  • Cinnamon x 5 drops
  • Ginger x 10 drops

Or  you will need

  • Orange x 20 drops
  • Rose x 5 drops
  • Jasmine x 5 drops
  • Clove bud x 1 drop

Blend well, diffuse in any room or put 5 to 6 drops in a warm bath.

To get the most from your essential oils blend, a diffuser is very helpful to disperse the molecules into the air.  There are different types of diffusers available.  Some use electricity and a small fan while others have a heating element or small lit candle under a bowl of water. You can even use a cotton ball in a small bowl.  Just be aware that when using a diffuser for extended periods of time, your sense of smell will become accustomed to the essential oils and you may not ‘smell’ them.

It is not only essential oils that can improve your mood and make you happy

Those oils that contain omega 3 fatty acids such as fish oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil or coconut oil can be very beneficial in overcoming the symptoms related to depression, like anxiety and melancholy. Research by Kuopio University in Finland found that taking B vitamin supplements could help treat depression. Adding foods rich in vitamin B and omega-3 fatty acids can help make you happier.

Not only laughter and oils make you happy but other things too

  • One of the most satisfying tasks is gardening.  Going out into the garden to dig or pull up weeds is very therapeutic and many gardeners will attest to feeling their happiest when gardening.
  • Another is getting into some warm body of water – such as a pool, a Jacuzzi or even the ocean to relax and just float in the water, igniting the body’s relaxation responses and lowering the stress hormone levels to make you feel happier.
  • Exercising regularly while enjoying the exercise at the same time can make you feel almost euphoric and on top of the world. Making time for at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times per week is a great way to feel happier and to improve your health levels at the same time. Exercise releases chemicals in the brain such as endorphins and anandamide which can boost your mood and leave you feeling great. Not only that, exercise is also good for boosting confidence levels and increasing self-esteem.
  • Finally, vitamin D is not called the feel good hormone for nothing! If you are not as happy as you might be, could a vitamin D deficiency be the reason why?  Research has shown that low levels of vitamin D can contribute to mood disorders and depression. One of the best sources of the mood-boosting vitamin is sunshine, exposing as much skin as possible for at least 15 minutes several times a week between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm during the warmer months of the year. During colder months, boost with a quality vitamin D3 supplement. The darker your skin, the longer you need in the sun.

Many in this day and age might feel that having material things (with plenty of retail activity) is the only way to be happy. Perhaps for a short while but the feeling soon wears off especially when there is nothing to take its place.

Instead do something selfless

Whether you want to take on a long-term volunteering role, make a donation to charity, or improve the happiness of someone you know with a thoughtful note or gift, just the effort of doing something for someone else is a great way to take your mind off yourself and make you feel happier.
