When A Chain Email Can Be Helpful & How To Recognize A Stroke | Amoils.com

Generally, I dislike receiving those chain-type emails – particularly when they have a sting in the tale with the warning that something terrible is going to happen to you if you neglect to pass it on to a whole lot of other people.

But today I received a very sensible and useful chain letter and I am definitely going to pass it on to you.

This email is all about how to recognize a stroke in someone

Whether a family member, a work colleague or even a stranger, this can help you to what to look for and possibly save a life.

If a neurologist can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours, he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke.The hard part is getting people to recognize a stroke in someone so that they can be medically cared for within those golden 3 hours.

There are 4 easy steps

These are for a non medical person to be able to identify a stroke in someone who appears to be unwell and all you have to do is to remember the first 4 letters of the word STROKE – that is S T R and O.

S – Ask the person to SMILE

T – Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE

R – Ask the person to RAISE BOTH ARMS and finally

O – Ask the person to OPEN THEIR MOUTH and STICK OUT THEIR TONGUE.

If the person has trouble with any one of these tasks or the tongue is crooked (that is it goes to one side of the mouth or the other) then call an emergency number immediately, describe the symptoms to the dispatcher at the other end and make sure the possible stroke victim receives early emergency medical treatment.

If you live or care for somebody in a “high risk group for strokes” such as someone who is elderly, has diabetes or high blood pressure, then you should always be aware of these symptoms.

When these symptoms appear, 9 times out of 10 they are a stroke victim

One of the problems with strokes is that people who are affected by them often have problems communicating with others so they may not be able to raise an alarm or alert others to the fact that something is wrong.  This is when you can be so important.

The scary part is that some 1.9 million brains cells are lost every minute that a stroke goes untreated – so you can see the need for urgency.  One of the treatments for strokes called thrombolysis (where medicines are used to dissolve blood clots) must be administered within 3 hours of the stroke happening.

The person suffering from the symptoms of a stroke may be having a mini stroke or transient ichaemic attack (TIA).  The symptoms are the same for both but will disappear after just a few minutes to perhaps a few hours.  A TIA is an alarm bell.  

1 in 5 with TIA will experience a full stroke during the following 4 weeks

This is especially true if they

  • Are aged over 60
  • Have diabetes
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Had TIA symptoms that lasted for more than an hour
  • Had both weakness in the body and problems with their speech during a TIA.

If you have a mini stroke, you also need urgent specialist medical attention within 24 hours

Most strokes are ischemic.  In an ischemic stroke or a TIA, a blood clot interrupts the blood supply to part of the brain.  This is usually the end result of a build up of fatty deposits (cholesterol and other debris) in the arteries over many years.  This build up causes the arteries in the brain to narrow or fur up and a blood clot may then block the flow of blood through the artery with all sorts of consequences.

So watch your blood pressure, keep an eye on your cholesterol levels, stick to a diet high in fruit and vegetables and eat natural rather than refined salt while avoiding processed foods.  We all need good quality fats in our diet.  If you drink heavily your blood pressure will be higher, so alcohol can be a factor.  Keeping to a reasonable weight and giving up smoking are very important.  12% of all strokes are caused by smoking.  Regular exercise will keep you slimmer and fitter.

So remember S T R O (first 4 letters of STROKE) so you can save someone else’s life and if you take care of your health, you could save your own life.  Strokes account for approximately 1 in every 17 deaths in the United States every year.

Strokes are a big killer.
