What is Colic?

Colic is the name given to the condition when your baby cries for longer than 3 hours in a day, for more than 3 days a week. This crying can be uncontrollable extended crying. Although this condition is harmless to your baby, it is extremely distressing for the parents. There is no known cause for colic but there are ways to help. Tips to help soothe a baby with colic

There are several techniques that can help to soothe your baby during the crying periods:

• Nurse your baby every 2-3 hours if you are breastfeeding
• Discuss with your doctor about changing your formula if you are bottle feeding
• Burp your baby more often during feeds
• Wrap your baby in a blanket
• Walk with your baby or sit in a rocking chair and try various positions
• Place your baby across your lap on his tummy and rub your baby’s back
• Give your baby a baby massage
• Be consistent in your responses to your baby’s cries and try not to worry or panic.
• Play music and dance with your baby or place him next to some type of noise, like an appliance.
• Take a shower or bathe with your baby.
• Take your baby out for walks in the stroller or carry in a baby sling.
• Put your baby in a swing - the motion may have a soothing effect.
• Put your baby in a baby seat in the back of the car and go for a ride - the vibration and movement of the car are often calming.
• Ensure there is no other reason for the crying such as hunger, tiredness, pain, the heat or the cold, boredom, over-stimulation or the need for a diaper change.
• Please be aware that smoking can increase the likelihood of colic (as well as many other problems) in your baby. Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or in your home.
