What are Warts & How Can You Get Rid of Them?
There are lots of different types of warts and many ways to get rid of them.
One of these is by concentrating on boosting the immune system by including plenty of vitamin C and zinc-rich and probiotic foods in your diet.
What are warts and how many different types are there?
- Common warts are most often seen on the hands and and you will notice skin-colored papules with a rough surface.
- Flat warts are usually occur on the backs of the hands and on the legs, appearing as smooth, flat-topped, yellow-brown papules.
- Intermediate warts are a combination of common and flat warts.
- Subungual and periungual warts appear under and around the fingernails or toenails.
- Plantar warts occur on the soles of the feet, looking like very thick callouses. They can become very painful.
- Mosaic warts are a group of close together plantar warts.
When are we at risk of getting warts?
We can be more at risk if:
- We use communal showers.
- We have a suppressed immune system due to either immunosuppressant drugs, other reasons or illness.
The good news is that in those with strong immune systems, warts are generally harmless and resolve on their own within months, or at most a couple of years, because of natural immunity.
How to Get Rid of Warts
These are the conventional methods:
1. Salicylic acid is a topical, prescription-strength wart medications that works by removing layers of the wart a little bit at a time when applied regularly.
2. Cryotherapy can be a painful and long treatment, destroying the wart by freezing it with liquid nitrogen. The treatment is often combined with the above salicyclic acid. Pain and swelling can be side effects.
3. Immune therapy is another form of treatment where medications or solutions are used to stimulate your own immune system to fight viral warts.
4. Minor surgery is where warts are cut away using an electric needle after first numbing the area. Scarring, pain and swelling are likely.
5. Laser treatment is where an intense beam of light to burn and destroy the wart tissue. It can be painful and cause scarring.
There are natural ways for wart removal
- Duct tape especially in children as it a safe and non threatening treatment for them. Cover the wart with silver duct tape for six days, soaking the wart in water, gently removing dead tissue, and then leaving the wart exposed for about 12 hours. Repeat until the wart has disappeared.
- Banana peels and garlic can be used on plantar, flat and common warts. (a) cut a piece of banana peel, place it over the wart and tape it in place or (b) cover the wart and surrounding skin with a thin layer of olive oil and apply a thin slice of fresh garlic and tape in place. This should be done at bedtime, and repeated nightly for up to three weeks. As the warts starts to disappear, the patch will turn black.
- Zinc is also available as an ointment for applying to the warts twice a day for three months.

How to boost that immune system
As mentioned in the opening paragraph, it is important to boost the immune system, whether you suffer from warts or want to prevent them in the future, with these foods rich in vitamin C, zinc and probiotics.
Here are some suggestions:
Vitamin C – citrus fruit, bell peppers and strawberries.
Zinc – grass-red beef, chickpeas and pumpkins seeds.
Probiotic foods – kimchi, live cultured yogurt, Greek yogurt, raw and unpasteurized soft cheese made from goat’s milk, sheep’s milk and cow’s milk, kombucha and kefir.
Warts are contagious
If you develop a wart, refrain from scratching or picking at it, wear something on your feet if you use public wet areas such as showers or locker rooms and avoid contact with anyone with a wart. Wash your hands carefully after touching warts and make sure you dry them thoroughly. Use your own clothing and towels and wash them frequently.
