How to prevent burns in the home?

Taking simple precautions can reduce the chances that your baby will be burned in your own home or that of family, friends or a child care center:

• Matches, lighters, chemicals and lit candles should be kept out of reach at all times.
• Electrical outlets should have child-safety covers and fireplaces, wood burning stoves, radiators and electric baseboard heaters should be screened where necessary.
• Check all equipment and appliances for old or frayed cords and extension cords. Any found to be unsafe should be discarded.
• Only buy sleepwear that is labelled flame retardant or organic cotton sleepwear which is naturally flame retardant.
• Ensure that any older children or adults in the house do not leave heating equipment such as hair styling appliances where younger children can get hold of them.
• Prevent house fires by fitting a smoke alarm on each level and in each bedroom of the house. Check every month and change the batteries twice a year.
• Never smoke in the house for any reason.
• Be very careful of fireworks or sparklers.
• Bathrooms can be dangerous - set the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees F or 49 degrees C or lower or install an anti-scald device. Turn the cold water on first and turn it off last when filling the bath and test the bath water with your elbow before putting your baby in his bath. When your baby is older, turn him away from the taps so he is less likely to play with them and turn on the hot water.
• Kitchens are even more dangerous - don’t let your baby use a baby walker in the kitchen, don’t hold a baby or small child when cooking and don’t drink hot beverages or soup with a child sitting on your lap. Always turn pot handles away from the front of the stove and avoid using tablecloths which a young child could pull. Keep hot foods and drinks out of reach of babies and young children. Even warming baby bottles in the microwave can be dangerous as liquid may heat unevenly and scald your baby’s mouth.
• Be careful outside on a hot day when the sun can make playground equipment too hot to touch or strollers and seats can cause burns from hot vinyl and metal.

What to do about more serious bumps and bruises?

• If your baby’s bruise is accompanied by swelling, then apply ice packs (wrapped in a clean cloth) for 15 minute periods several times per day during the first 48 hours. Try to do this when reading a book or having a cuddle so your baby is sitting still.
• Falls from a bed or a tumble down the stairs may warrant a check-up with the doctor in case there are less obvious injuries.
• A bruise behind the ear following a bang on the head, any bruises that do not fade in 2 weeks, or if your baby is in pain for more than 24 hours should also have a medical check-up.
• Unexplained black-and-blue or purple spots that are not associated with specific bumps or falls should also be checked up as they may indicate that your baby has a tendency to bleed easily.
