What is constipation?
Baby or Infant Constipation is caused when the stool becomes harder or firmer. Your baby may become uncomfortable or experience some pain when he/she needs to have a bowel movement. Constipation can also be caused by the bowels not being completely emptied as normal. This can cause a build up of stool, which may lead to constipation

Give your baby a warm bath to help relax him/her.
Massage your baby’s tummy. With some oil on your fingers, start at the tummy button and then massage outwards in circles in a clockwise direction.
Move your baby’s legs in a quick cycling motion while he is lying on his back.
Give your baby extra fluids with bottles of cooled, boiled water to help soften the stool.
Once your baby is older, you can start introducing more cereal (oats) and fruit or vegetable purees into his/her diet. These are rich in fiber and will help prevent constipation.
Provide a balanced diet. Be careful if your baby is constipated because carrots, squash, bananas, rice cereal and apple sauce can all produce firmer stools and therefore worsen the constipation. Pears, peaches, plums, apricots, peas and prunes will all make stools softer.
