What are Stretch Marks?

Medically known as "striae gravidarum", stretch marks are caused by excessive stretching of the skin particularly during pregnancy. Although the skin is very elastic, sometimes the weight gain can be more than the skin can handle, especially in the later stages of pregnancy when the baby is growing so quickly. Other factors such as pregnancy in older women, twins or multiple births, and excess amniotic fluid are all additional contributory factors. Nearly 50% of all pregnant women will have stretch marks.
