Arthritis Relief and Treatment
Let’s face it, arthritis relief, tempting as it may sound, is difficult to come by. However, it’s not impossible to achieve. Before one should set out in search of an effective arthritis relief, one must take some time out to understand the disease. Only true knowledge can give one the right means to find relief from this acutely painful condition to afflict mankind.
According to medical statistics, arthritis is believed to afflict more than 40 million Americans. In fact, it is one of the most frequently noticed symptoms in people aged over 40. Its chronic nature is quite alarming too. Continuing research in the field of arthritis has revealed that more than 100 different forms of the disease exist, making matters no easier. They are known by different names to medical practitioners.
However, most of them share a few common symptoms, such as joint inflammation, associated pain, limited mobility and the like. Of these, osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems. It comes second only to heart disease as a cause of disability to work normally. It imposes mild to severe limitations on such simple daily activities such as walking, getting up from the bed, dressing and bathing for over 7 million Americans. People from the baby boomer generation are now running the most risk.
Arthritis relief can rarely be found from one source. If one seeks long-lasting relief from the pain and the discomfort associated with arthritis, one must encompass a variety of means to that end. And remember, arthritis is a condition that can never be cured overnight. Just popping in a painkiller when the pain strikes may provide temporary relief but long-lasting and effective relief from the condition can be obtained only through a carefully planned pain-management system.
Arthritis is closely linked to maintaining a healthy body weight. Obesity can be detrimental in a case involving arthritis. Several types of arthritis lead to the degeneration of the cartilage tissue that buffers the bone joints. This causes the bone ends to rub against each other during any movement involving them, causing abrasion and consequently, some degree of pain. Excessive body weight exerts unnecessary force on these damaged joints. Weight bearing joints, such as those of the knees, take the brunt of the weight and can quickly develop into a very painful condition.
A proper diet, along with some degree of moderate exercise, can be particularly helpful under the circumstances. While a balanced diet will help in maintaining an ideal body weight and check obesity, exercise will help in keeping the affected joints mobile and check the ravages of arthritis.
Apart from these, one can seek relief from arthritis pain from using anti-inflammatory drugs and pain reducing medications, heat and cold packs to soothe the muscle and joint pain, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, topical massage with soothing oils, and in some extreme cases, by opting for surgery.
