Psoriasis is a skin disease where red patches that look
like scales begin to appear in the affected portion
of the skin. These patches are also referred to as lesions
or plaques. Psoriasis lesions can appear almost anywhere
including the fingers, the elbows, knees, nails, and
even in the scalp and the genital organs. When
psoriasis
happens in the scalp, it can also lead to hair loss.
The human skin goes through constant changes as dead
cells are replaced by new ones on an ongoing basis,
but when the production of the skin intensifies due
to some reason, the result is the psoriasis skin disease.
Experts are of the opinion that this has something to
do with immunity. But the good thing about psoriasis
is that it is not contagious.
Stress, alcohol and depression are likely causes
of psoriasis. This skin disease can be further classified
as plaque psoriasis, flexural psoriasis, guttate psoriasis,
pustular psoriasis, nail psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis
and erythrodermic psoriasis.
