Unwanted Skin Mole or A Warning Sign?

Skin moles are more common than we realize, and they can often go unnoticed. Knowing when to see a doctor or consider removal isn’t always straightforward. We’re here to help you understand what to look out for and share gentle, practical steps you can take to care for your skin.

What Are Moles?

Moles are small growths on the skin that can be skin-colored, brown, or black. Most appear during childhood or early adulthood and are usually harmless. Some stay flat while others become raised over time. Many fade or disappear completely as we age.

What Causes Moles?

Moles form when the cells that give our skin its color (called melanocytes) group together instead of spreading out evenly. You might be born with a few, but more can appear over the years, especially in areas that get a lot of sun exposure, like your face, arms, shoulders, or back.

What Types of Moles Should I Worry About?

While most moles are benign (non-cancerous moles), certain changes are worth paying attention to. Regularly examining your skin, especially areas that get more sun, can help you catch any early signs of atypical moles. In general, you should watch for moles that start to grow larger, change shape, become raised, or begin to itch, bleed, ooze, or cause pain, as these symptoms could indicate something more serious.

Assessing Moles With The ABCDE Guide

The ABCDE guide is an easy way to help identify irregular moles. The signs you should look out for are:

  • A - Asymmetry: Would both halves of the mole be symmetrical if you drew a line through the middle?
  • B - Border: Are the edges of the mole defined? Or do they appear unclear, uneven or tattered?
  • C - Color: Are there other shades of multiple colors that appear in the mole or is it the same color throughout?
  • D - Diameter: Is your mole bigger than 6mm? About the size of a pencil eraser.
  • E - Evolving: Has the mole changed over a short period of time? Does the appearance seem different?

If any of your moles have been exhibiting these characteristics it is advised that you get them checked by a medical professional. While most moles are harmless, an atypical mole may be a sign of melanoma (a type of skin cancer), so it is always worth being sure.

How to Get Rid of Moles on Your Skin?

Even if the moles on your skin aren’t of medical concern, you may still want them removed - especially if they are in places that rub against clothing, draw attention, or affect your confidence. If your moles have been checked by a doctor and aren’t showing any of the warning signs mentioned above, you can feel more confident exploring removal options.

If you’re looking to remove moles on your face naturally, there are various safe, at-home approaches that avoid harsh chemicals or freezing treatments, making it easier to address your cosmetic concerns with care.

Tips for Monitoring Skin Health

Life gets busy, and it’s easy to miss the little things - especially when it comes to our skin. Taking a few moments to check in with your skin regularly can make a real difference. After a shower or while getting dressed, take a quick look, especially if you’ve noticed something new or different.

Sun exposure is one of the main reasons new moles appear. Applying SPF daily is one of the simplest and most important protective habits you can build.

You can also take simple, everyday steps to care for the skin around your moles. Keeping the area clean, moisturized, and protected can help reduce irritation and maintain healthy-looking skin.

Lastly, it’s helpful to know your family history in case there’s a known risk of melanoma which you need to be aware of. If you're ever unsure, it's always best to speak with a medical professional. Peace of mind is worth it.
