Do You Have Skin Tags?
If you suddenly notice a soft, skin-colored growth on your skin, you could well have a skin tag.
Skin tags are very common and are usually small and harmless.
How do you check if you have a skin tag?
- The important thing to know is that skin tags are usually the same colour as the rest of your skin - or perhaps a little darker.
- They have the appearance of looking like they're hanging off the skin.
- They are usually pain-free.
- Skin tags often grow where your skin rubs together or where there are folds in your skin.
- Skin tags range in size from a quarter inch to an inch and a half.
- They can appear singly or there may be a large group of them.
Skin tags will usually appear...
- On the neck
- Under the arms
- On the eyelids
- Under the breasts
- Around the anus
Why do skin tags appear?
While the cause of skin tags is not always known, they are sometimes caused by skin rubbing against skin.
You are more likely to develop skin tags if:
- You are overweight or obese - especially if you have skin folds rubbing together.
- You have type 2 diabetes as severe insulin resistance is thought to be a reason for skin tags to grow.
- You're pregnant as those hormonal changes that come with pregnancy are thought to be another reason for their appearance.
How can you remove skin tags?
While it is not necessary to remove skin tags for medical reasons, they can sometimes cause problems by catching on jewellery or clothing where they might bleed or cause discomfort.
There are various conventional ways in which skin tags can be removed.
A healthcare provider could choose one of these options:
- Excision where the practitioner uses a sterile technique to cut the skin tag off. They use a scalpel (surgical blade) or surgical scissors to do this. Generally, only smaller skin tags are removed this way. A chemical compound can be applied after removal to reduce bleeding.
- Cauterization is when a skin tag is burned off at its base. A provider can do this with an electrical probe or needle that produces an electric current. This method of skin tag removal also seals the wound to prevent infection and bleeding.
- Cryosurgery where the skin tag is frozen with liquid nitrogen. It may burn when the provider applies it to your skin. After cryosurgery, it takes approximately ten days for the tag to fall off.
Once a skin tag is removed it does not usually return.
Removing skin tags can cause scarring or hyperpigmentation where the skin tag was, particularly on darker skin. These effects are usually temporary. Very occasionally, they can be permanent.
