What are Keloid Scars?
A keloid scar is an overgrowth of tissue that occurs when too much collagen is produced at the site of a wound.
That scar will just keep on growing - even after the wound itself has healed.
Keloid scars are raised above the skin and can be pink, red, the same colour or darker than surrounding skin.
They are often itchy or painful - and can even restrict movement if they're tight and near a joint.
The signs and symptoms of a keloid scar
A keloid scar may form within months or even years after receiving the injury to your skin.
The signs and symptoms can include:
- Thick, irregular scarring, typically on the earlobes, shoulders, cheeks or middle chest.
- Shiny, hairless, lumpy and raised skin.
- The size of the keloid scar can vary (a) depending on the size of the original injury and (b) when the keloid stops growing.
- The scar can vary in texture - from soft to firm and rubbery.
- The scar can vary in color from reddish, brown or purplish. The color will depend on your skin color.
- The scar can be itchy and cause discomfort.
What can you do about keloid scars?
